Abia State Union South Africa, formerly known as Abia Indigenes Congress South Africa, was established in 2016 following a historic agreement among five existing chapters located in different provinces of South Africa—Johannesburg, Pretoria, Western Cape, Durban, and Port Elizabeth. These chapters reached a consensus to unite under one umbrella body in order to promote unity, cooperation, and the collective interests of Abians residing in South Africa. At the time of the unification, it was agreed that the national body would adopt the name of the Johannesburg Chapter as its working identity. The term “chapter” was retained to describe branches across various provinces, particularly because some provinces accommodate more than one chapter due to distance and proximity considerations. Limpopo Chapter, which was an observer during the 2016 convention where the unification agreement was reached, has since been fully inaugurated into the national body. Over the years, the Union has experienced steady growth and expansion. Currently, Abia State Union South Africa comprises ten chapters, namely: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Western Cape, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga, East London, and Northern Cape. A significant milestone in the Union’s history occurred during the 2024 National Convention held in Pretoria, where members unanimously agreed to change the name from Abia Indigenes Congress South Africa to Abia State Union South Africa, reflecting a broader and more inclusive identity.

Abia State Union South Africa is guided by its National President, Chief Chile Samuel Ipko, National Patrons, Matrons, and Traditional Leaders. While each chapter is Lead by its respective Governors, Chapter Patrons and Matrons. The Union organizes an annual flagship cultural event known as NZUKO ABIA South Africa, which brings together Abians from all chapters to celebrate unity, culture, and shared heritage.

The Union also upholds democratic principles through its Elective Conference, which is held every three years to usher in newly elected National Executive Members responsible for steering the affairs of the organization.

Today, Abia State Union South Africa stands as a united and vibrant body committed to promoting unity, cultural heritage, welfare, and the collective progress of Abians across South Africa.
